Letâs Connect
Itâs no lie that the wealthiest people have relied on their connections to get them to where they are today. What would Facebook be if Mark Zuckerberg didnât meet Eduardo Saverin? In fact, our social connections keep us mentally healthy and is the best form of socioeconomic mobility we have at our disposal.
If our connections are found every day, why can it be so difficult to meet new people? There are a lot of barriers to meeting new people such as being an introvert or even a monetary barrier. I guarantee you that improving your every day social skills will benefit you more than you could ever know.
General Networking Tips:
Always have something to offer
Create a follow-up plan with the person
Donât network to meet a large amount of people. Network to meet the one person in the room.
Paying for Connections
One of the greatest barriers for me is the string of lunches after each attempt to get to know someone past the surface level. If I took all the people I genuinely wanted to sit down with, Iâd be over budget for the next year. How can we keep in touch if we donât want to end up paying for each outing? Here are my tips:
Join a networking hobby like hiking, dining club, or a recreational activity
Send the person a nice email (or Instagram DM) depending on question
Create a CRM list and automate the status to reach out to someone once a month
That last part is a big one for me currently. Iâm writing down names and having an Excel doc tell me if itâs been longer than one month since Iâve said hello. The best advice Iâve ever received is that networking doesnât begin when youâre looking for a job. It starts this very second.
Corellating Networking and Income
Grant Cardone once said, âYour network determines your net worth.â As I get older, that couldnât be more true. If weâre a culmination of the five closest people in our friend group, where does that place you?
The smartest people in the world have tapped into their network and used their friendâs skills in a way that benefited them. Imagine assembling a team to accomplish your goal. I like to think this is a great way of meeting people.
