The Internet Bill That Won’t Quit
I’m going to be brutally honest here. I’m not perfect when it comes to my monthly bills. I will often overlook the costs of the basic necessities for investing advice. With personal finance, we should look at the holistic approach and tackle from a saving, income, and investing perspective.
This week, I’m writing to you about the Internet bill that’s been a pain in my side since before my wedding. I saw my monthly rate nearly double from the beginning until late 2022.
I’m not perfect, but enough is enough when you notice a recurring expense going through the roof. I’m going to be writing about my Internet bill here, but the methods below can apply to just about any utility bill you have given your area.
Background to the Pesky Bill
When I first moved to my L.A. apartment in 2019, I snagged a monthly promotion with Spectrum Internet for $40 a month for a year.
The thing is that I didn’t understand what would happen after that year. Since then my rate increased from $40 to $65 to the current $85 monthly fee for up to 300 MPBS. There were zero notices about price increases over the years which I didn’t appreciate from a service.
With an over 100% increase, I think it’s time to put a stop to this. Although the speed is great within my apartment, I’m a firm believer that you can always negotiate.
Negotiate like your life depends on it
Here are the steps to take when it comes to your monthly bills:
Audit your monthly bills
Have your bills increased over the year? By how much? Take stock in the bills that are causing you troubles
Shop around and do your research
You’ll need to plan for battle and this is the first step. Find out what your friends are paying in the area. Seek rates from competitors and
Go to battle and negotiate
I’d recommend going in person depending on the bill you’re negotiating but a phone call is second best
Throw out all the tricks you learned from your research phase. The worst a provider can do is say no at this point.
Keep up the good fight and take stock in those monthly expenses!
Have a good week,
Jordan
